From the grouse notebook

A few facts worth knowing.

  • The log is a stage

A ruffed grouse makes its drumroll with wings moving through air. It does not beat the log.

  • Stillness is a defence

Spruce grouse may remain motionless and rely on their feather pattern to avoid notice.

  • A spring dance floor

Sharp-tailed grouse display together on open grounds called leks, where males stamp their feet and raise their tails.
