From the grouse notebook

A few facts worth knowing.

  • A cycle is not a camp forecast

Northern ruffed grouse often show roughly decade-long cycles. Not every northern population follows that pattern.

  • Small winter snowshoes

Extensions along a ruffed grouse's toes help it move over soft snow.

  • A food pouch for later

A spruce grouse's crop can hold food weighing up to about ten percent of its body weight.
